Something far too personal and intimate for me to be read. Kaur pours her heart out on every page, and I'm just so beyond grateful that she decided to share her sanctuary of hurt and healing with us. Sometimes, I did foolishly wonder as to why she wrote in such depth about her past lover(s), and then it hit me that this was her recovery process.

The words that lay on the pages was her way of healing herself. In whatever way, writing had helped her. I know many people comment on the fact that this book of poetry is similar to that of 'Tumblr Poetry'. I agree, but I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing. I believe that words are art, and no matter what platform it is on (and no matter how angsty it is), it is still that: art. Of course I didn't resonate with a few poems, and couldn't quite connect with them on the level I did with others, but I still loved it despite that. The sketches were so beautiful, and complemented her words so well.
I loved the poems which promoted feminism and the idea that women are art, and they were so well done. I genuinely think this is the book that I will turn to after I suffer my first heartbreak.
Guest 7 months ago 4.5 from me. I do own this book, which is unusual, as I very rarely buy books that I can borrow from the library. I think there is probably something here for most young women to relate to and if you're a woman (of any age) who has suffered abuse then many of these poems will resonate. None of the poems were very long and there are four sections to the book, so its easy to dip in and out of it.
I didn't enjoy or appreciate all of the poems and I wouldn't return to the more sexual poems but many of the others were extremely insightful. As an additional benefit, the book was a good size for my handbag and I liked the feel of the matt black pages. This book isn't strictly a collection of poems but rather a collection of thoughts (and sketches) that in many cases are beautiful, moving or thought provoking enough to be read as poetry. There were some poems that didn't flow well because the line breaks were in the wrong place but so what; this is one woman's thoughts as she felt them.
The author is twenty one years old and this book is her very personal journey. She was brave enough to share her experiences and feelings in the hope that it might be helpful to others. I'm forty three years old and I gained validation from reading some of the poems in this book and I've already gifted a copy (to an eighteen year old), so I do heartily recommend. My only negative is that there was one poem that wasn't in any way original and did read like a bumper sticker (which is why it wasn't a five star rating from me.). Guest 7 months ago Um.
What was that?! That was definitely not for me, I love poetry. I love writing and and reading it, but this.
To me, this was just a bunch of tumblr text posts, midnight ramblings, and well-written facts. I get the overall message of the book, but it didn't click with me. One of my pet peeves is writing 'I' as 'i' and that was all over the book.
I don't know the reason behind this, but it made me cringe every time I came across it. Also,most of the poems are very brief sentences, I tried to recite this 'poetry' but it was awkward.
I couldn't connect to this book emotionally- I understood the point of it, don't get me wrong, but I didn't feel it. I did, however, liked the final part of the book, they are like fortune cookies to read when you're down.
